A survey was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate the use of chemical-resistant floor coverings in health care facilities in the United States. A 36-item telephone survey was conducted by the survey division of the National Center for Environmental Health and Office of Inspector General, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The survey was sent to a stratified random sample of 1000 health care facilities identified as current users of chemical-resistant floor coverings. A total of 359 health care facilities responded to the survey. Overall, 80.8% of health care facilities reported the use of chemical-resistant floor coverings. When comparing the use of chemical-resistant floor coverings among different types of facilities, only a small percentage (14.7%) of hospitals reported the use of chemical-resistant floor coverings. The most commonly reported chemical-resistant flooring used was a closed-cell polyurethane foam (53.8%). The majority of health care facilities that responded to the survey reported using chemical-resistant floor coverings. Unfortunately, use of chemical-resistant floor coverings in the United States has not increased significantly in the last decade.
